Farhad Kanuga - March 2022
The March exhibit, FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS, at First Congregational UCC’s Oak Street Gallery will focus on the continual problem of food scarcity throughout America, a daily problem faced by far too many of our Asheville neighbors. Contrary to popular belief the problem lies not with the lack of food in America but rather the distribution and availability of food to millions of children and adults all over the U.S.
According to the organization Feeding America as many as 18 million children, 1 out of every 4 in America, and as many as 54 million people in total face food insecure households every day in this country. Over the last two years Covid has greatly exacerbated the problem.
Feeding America data further estimates that many families experiencing food
insecurity also face multiple hardships in maintaining good health. The cost, which
is occurring in every county in the U.S., could be as high as 50 billion dollars a year.
It is worth noting that this estimate is 5 years old and pre Covid!
The Oak Street Gallery show, organized by the FCUCC Benevolence Team, will exhibit photographs taken by Asheville photographer Farhad Kanuga. The photographs will highlight scenes and activities of Asheville community organizations as they go about collecting and actively preparing to distribute foodstuff to various destinations throughout the Asheville area.
Four local organizations will be invited to give a short presentation during four
consecutive FCUCC Sunday church services in March 2022.
•Loving Food Resources - March 6th
•Children First Community School - March 13th
•12 Baskets - March 20th
•Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry - March 27th
