First Congregational United Church of Christ Asheville

Worship

First Congregational United Church of Christ seeks to live out its vision by creating worship which reflects and nurtures both the truths we hold and the questions we embrace--a place where word, sacraments, prayer, liturgy, music, dance, drama, and storytelling come together as physical and spiritual expressions of our commitment to our faith. We worship as a Christian community, seeking to honor the symbols and practices of Christian faith and the traditions and mission of the United Church of Christ; and as a community marked by diversity, we open ourselves to diverse modes of expression and spiritual reflection. As advocates of justice and peace, we recognize that we must first build justice and peace within our own spiritual community. Achieving this goal requires that our worship be flexible and multifaceted, providing a welcoming environment where diversity can thrive and all can explore God's truth and creative presence in an atmosphere of acceptance and grace.

Lent – A Time of Blessing

Do you have places of refreshment to which you frequently return? For the Church, Lent is a time to return to a place of refreshment and blessing.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 6. Although reminding us of our mortality and sin, the ashes also stand for cleansing and have been traditionally used to enrich the soil for better growth.

The stories and readings selected for our worship services throughout Lent encourage growth in faith and discipleship, as we hear their messages of blessing. However, these stories also speak of the realities of temptation and evil, struggle and doubt, drought and darkness through which growth and blessing come, especially on the journey to hope and new life that Easter represents.

You are invited to return to a place of blessing and refreshment this Lenten season by:

  • studying the scriptures (listed below) that will give focus to the weekly worship services
  • participating in Wednesday Night Lenten Suppers – 5:30–6:30pm – beginning February 13 and continuing through March 12. A simple meal will be provided at 5:30pm (donations accepted). From 6:00–6:30pm there will be a time for prayer and reflection on the scripture text for the coming Sunday.
  • joining in Sunday morning worship services at 10:30 a.m. and the special services of Holy Week and Easter
