 Everyday Spiritual Practices
Led by Joe Hoffman

Overview:  We will use some of the spiritual practices named in Barbara Brown Taylor’s book An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith, to explore our own ways of connecting with God and one another. Reading the book is optional, and you are welcome to attend all or as many of the sessions you are able to attend. Each session is self-contained. Childcare is provided.

Feb. 24    The Practice of Walking on Earth (Chapter 4)
What does it mean to walk? To feel our feet on the ground? What
do we learn about ourselves, Earth, and God by walking?

Mar. 3    The Practice of Saying No (Chapter 8)
We will reflect on the loss of Sabbath in our culture. What is the relationship between the loss of Sabbath and the rise of consumerism? Why is it hard to do nothing?

Mar. 10     The Practice of Getting Lost (Chapter 5)
We often lose our way. We get lost in our marriage. We get lost
on a journey. We lose touch with what we think is important. How
is getting lost a spiritual practice?

Mar. 17    The Practice of Encountering Others (Chapter 6)
How do we greet the stranger? How do we greet those we
see each day as we go through our day? What is our need for
        community? For others?

Mar 24    The Practice of Living with Purpose (Chapter 11)
What is your practice of prayer? For many of us – perhaps
for most of us – this does not come easy. At least not in
the prescribed forms. But to pray might just mean to be
as fully human as you can be.
